NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

An essential element of SBQ steelmaking, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) ensures finished product quality, structural integrity, performance and reliability. Since 2021, Charter Steel has invested over $50M in developing in-house NDT capabilities, including bar straightening, ultrasonic testing and magnetic flux leakage testing.

Bar Straightening

Bar straightening is a mechanical process that passes steel bars through rollers under controlled force to remove any bends, twists or other distortions. Traditionally done using a two-roll straightener, Charter utilizes a unique ten-roll system that provides exceptional straightness and increased throughput.

Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic testing reveals subsurface imperfections, including cracks, contaminants, voids or other imperfections that affect SBQ steel integrity. High-frequency sound waves pass through the bars, while reflected sound waves indicate the presence and position of any internal defects.

Magnetic Flux Leakage Testing

Magnetic Flux Leakage Testing (MFLT) identifies cracks, pits, scabs, nonmetallic inclusions as well as other surface and near-surface defects that affect SBQ steel integrity. MFLT uses strong magnets to temporarily magnetize steel bars. Defects in the bar distort the magnetic field as magnetic flux “leaks” from the bar. MFLT is a highly sensitive method for revealing extremely tiny cracks or similar imperfections.
